The story / Unconfirmed

Three underwater sites recorded along the Montenegrin coast remain insufficiently investigated for secure identification. They include two probable shipwrecks and one aircraft wreck. Although their locations have been documented, no systematic archaeological survey, diagnostic recording, or archival study has yet established their date, type, nationality, function, or circumstances of loss.

Unidentified underwater sites

Three underwater sites recorded along the Montenegrin coast remain insufficiently investigated for secure identification. They include two probable shipwrecks and one aircraft wreck. Although their locations have been documented, no systematic archaeological survey, diagnostic recording, or archival study has yet established their date, type, nationality, function, or circumstances of loss.

These sites should therefore be regarded as unidentified underwater cultural heritage. Their designation is provisional and may be revised following detailed fieldwork, technical analysis, and historical research.

Interpretation

The available evidence is currently insufficient to associate these remains with a named vessel, aircraft, historical event, or specific period. Visible structural features may indicate the presence of a wreck, but they cannot alone provide a reliable identification. In particular, underwater sites may have been altered by impact, corrosion, salvage, fishing activity, sediment movement, or the collapse of structural elements over time.

Heritage significance

Even without a confirmed identity, these sites are potentially valuable evidence of Montenegro’s maritime and military past. The two probable shipwrecks may relate to commercial navigation, fishing, naval activity, or other coastal maritime operations, while the aircraft wreck may be connected with twentieth-century aviation and military activity in the Adriatic.

Their lack of identification should not be understood as a lack of importance. On the contrary, they represent a significant research resource and require careful documentation and protection. Until further investigation establishes their origin and chronology, precise site information should be managed responsibly and shared only where necessary for research, heritage-management, and conservation purposes.
