Probable Junkers Ju 88 aircraft wreck
Off the coast of Čanj lies the wreck of a twin-engined aircraft dating to the Second World War. Discovered in 2008, it rests on a sandy seabed and is among the best-preserved aircraft wrecks currently known in Montenegrin waters.
Based on observations and identification proposed by members of the local diving community, the wreck has been tentatively identified as a German Junkers Ju 88. Its visible structural characteristics—including the wings and engines remaining associated with the fuselage—are consistent with this preliminary attribution. The tail section appears to have detached, most likely as a consequence of the impact with the sea.
However, the identification has not yet been confirmed through systematic archaeological, technical, or archival research. Further investigation is required, including detailed photogrammetric recording, measurement and comparison of diagnostic airframe components, examination for serial numbers or manufacturer’s marks, and research in relevant German, Allied, and regional wartime archival records. Until such work is completed, the site should be referred to as a probable Junkers Ju 88 aircraft wreck, rather than as a definitively identified example.
